In Palmetto Bay, October Is a Month You Spend After Sunset

  • October 8, 2026

"We are back July 9th & every Thursday evening at beautiful Palmetto Bay Park." Palmetto Bay resident Barbara Ferenczi posted that on Patch after a storm called off the July 2 Sunset Eats Night Market. Palmetto-Cutler News picked it up in a piece about the market "pulling Palmetto Bay neighbors out after dark every Thursday."

In July, the market was one Thursday habit. This month it sits inside a much bigger evening schedule. Between Deering Estate on the bay, Palmetto Bay Park on SW 95th Avenue and Coral Reef Park on SW 152nd Street, October has something after sunset on most nights of the week. Several of these programs run only in this window.

Thursday Is the Night Everything Lands On

The Sunset Eats Night Market is the anchor. Central Makers Markets runs it from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. every Thursday along Park Road, in front of the ball fields and playground at 17535 SW 95th Avenue. Admission and parking are free. The series started on Thursday, June 11, so it isn't new this fall. It has kept going past the summer, and the Village calendar lists a market on Thursday, October 15.

Expect food trucks, local artisan booths, sweets, lemonade and live music. Kids' painting costs $10 and covers supplies, a canvas and an apron. Free salsa lessons begin at 7:30 p.m. The event listing jokes that this means "Miami time," 8 p.m. The playground stays open until 10 p.m. on market nights. No published source names the individual food trucks. The organizer posts its weekly lineup on Instagram at @central_makers_markets, and that's the place to check before you head over.

Sources disagree on how long the market will run. The organizer's page says "all summer long," a South Dade Spotlight listing says "through the fall," and the July news report says weekly through 2026. For October, the Thursday schedule stands. After that, Instagram is the most reliable signal.

Thursdays also bring a second option on the bay. Deering Estate's Historic Ghost Tours run on October 8, 15, 22 and 29, all Thursdays, and on the Tuesdays between them, October 6, 13, 20 and 27. On those Thursdays you can take kids to the market at 5:30 and still make a 7:30 tour, with check-in 15 minutes early.

Deering Estate Keeps Its Most Distinctive Programs for After Hours

Deering Estate's daytime offerings run year-round. The daily guided museum tour starts at 11:30 a.m. Most of the estate's October programs, though, are scheduled for after dark, and they're the ones you can't easily do somewhere else.

Historic Ghost Tours run 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and cost $45 per person. Guides cover the estate's history, its past residents and the paranormal activity visitors and staff have reported, and the tour follows paths once walked by Indigenous People, early Miami settlers and Charles Deering. This year the tour stays inside the historic Richmond Cottage because the Stone House is closed for restoration. It's for adults and youth ages 9 and up. You can bring your own cameras and paranormal equipment. Late arrivals aren't admitted or refunded. Every 2026 date the estate lists for this series falls in October.

The Night Hike & Campfire is on Wednesday, October 14, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., and costs $25. A naturalist leads the group to Cutler Creek to listen for owls and explore the hammock after dark, and a campfire follows. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring water, snacks and insect repellent. A flashlight and s'mores are encouraged. Youth ages 4 to 17 need a registered parent or guardian.

The Herp Tour takes place Saturday, October 10, from 7 to 9 p.m., at $20 per person. A naturalist leads it through the estate's restricted natural areas to look for South Florida's native reptiles and amphibians. Groups meet at the Visitor Center.

Moon Viewing is Friday, October 23, from 5 to 8 p.m., for $10. It's an after-hours picnic on the front lawn facing Biscayne Bay. Bring chairs, blankets, binoculars or a telescope. Picnic tables in the Royal Palm Grove go first come, first served. Battery lanterns are fine, but flames and candles aren't allowed, and the museums are closed during the event. Long sleeves and bug repellent are recommended. After October 23, the next moon viewing on the estate's schedule is January 22, 2027.

Deering Estate Foundation members get 10% off ticketed programs with a promo code from the foundation office. If your household plans to do several of these, membership is worth asking about.

How the Week Fills In

Put the venues together and the month looks like this.

Night What's on Where
Tuesday, Oct 6, 13, 20, 27 Historic Ghost Tours, 7:30 p.m. Deering Estate
Wednesday, Oct 14 Night Hike & Campfire, 7 p.m. Deering Estate
Thursday, every week Sunset Eats Night Market, 5:30 p.m. Palmetto Bay Park
Thursday, Oct 8, 15, 22, 29 Historic Ghost Tours, 7:30 p.m. Deering Estate
Friday, Oct 23 Moon Viewing, 5 p.m. Deering Estate
Saturday, Oct 10 Herp Tour, 7 p.m. Deering Estate
Saturday, Oct 24 Trick-or-Treat & Movie Night, 6 p.m. Coral Reef Park
Sunday, Oct 25 Hispanic Heritage Month Concert, 6 p.m. Deering Estate

Mondays are the only open night on the grid. Daytime picks up the gaps on weekends. On Saturday, October 10, Deering also hosts a Bird Walk from 7:30 to 10 a.m. for $20. The estate sits within the Biscayne Bay Important Bird Area, and guides look for some of its estimated 200 resident and migratory species, including warblers, herons and sandpipers. Meet the Artists-in-Residence, with workshops, talks and tours, runs the same day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Sunday, October 11, Adam Skowronski of the North American Butterfly Association's Miami Blue Chapter leads a $5 pollinator workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. about the nectar plants that butterflies, bees, moths and birds depend on. So October 10 can run from a 7:30 a.m. bird walk to a 9 p.m. herp tour without leaving the estate.

The Last Weekend Stacks Three Evenings in a Row

The busiest stretch comes at the end of the month. Moon Viewing on Friday, October 23, is followed by the Village's Halloween Trick-or-Treat & Movie Night on Saturday, October 24, at Coral Reef Park, 7895 SW 152nd Street. Trick-or-treating starts at 6 p.m., Minions & Monsters screens at 7, and food vendors stay until 9.

On Sunday, October 25, vocalist Susana Behar performs a Hispanic Heritage Month Concert at the Deering Estate Visitor Center Theater from 6 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 plus tax. With an hour-long program and a 6 p.m. start, it's the easiest of the three for a Sunday with school or work the next morning.

What's Still Fenced Off This Month

A couple of things in the Village aren't ready yet. The Palmetto Bay Park Skate Park has been closed for improvements since the Village's July 30 notice, which estimated about three months of work, weather permitting, and gave no firm reopening date. In September, South Dade Spotlight projected a late-October reopening from that timeline and noted rain could push it back. Since the Village hasn't announced a date, families heading to a Thursday market should plan on the playground and ball fields.

Starting this month, a new drainage project will also change some evening driving and walking routes. The Village posted on October 1 that work in sub-basin 42, near SW 170th and SW 169th Streets west of SW 76th Avenue, begins in October and is expected to finish by April 2027. Separately, Miami-Dade Water & Sewer is installing new water mains on SW 178th Street and SW 178th Terrace between SW 93rd and SW 94th Avenues, and on SW 141st Terrace between SW 72nd Avenue and SW 74th Court. Repaving and restriping will follow. SW 72nd Avenue is the road to Deering Estate's gate at 16701.

Deering sells tickets for its programs online through Miami-Dade Parks, and confirming dates there before you go is the safest plan. The Sunset Eats Instagram account is the quickest way to check whether weather has canceled a market.

The Cromer Team has followed Palmetto Bay through decades of Thursday nights, bay sunsets and park seasons. If you'd like a neighbor's view of how this side of the Village spends its evenings, or what's changing on your own streets, we'd be glad to talk.
