Rainy Season Reminders

As we head into the heart of Miami’s summer, and you find yourself heading out of town or into vacation mode, a quick round of rainy season reminders never hurts. A few to-dos to keep in mind:

  • Clean out gutters and drains.
  • Check wipers, tires, and your go-to rain shoes.
  • Dump standing water (mosquitoes don’t need
an invitation).
  • Stay ahead of storm alerts. It’s always better
to know before you go.
  • Spot a mosquito problem? Call 311 to request free mosquito control services from the county.

Coco’s Corner

Each summer, from late May through August, mango trees all over Miami start dropping their golden fruit, so this month, Coco is on a mango mission! If you spot a mango tree in your neighborhood, it’s time for a scavenger walk.

Count how many you see, and if you notice ripe mangoes on the ground or hanging low, ask a grown-up if it’s okay to pick one (always with permission!). Then head home to whip up a tasty mango snack.

Try blending mango chunks with ice and a splash of orange juice for a kid-friendly slushy. Messy, sweet, and so good! Fun fact: Some people call mango the king of fruits because they’ve been loved for over 4,000 years around the world.

Grill Smarter with Chef Josh Wahler

Want to level up your backyard BBQ game? We asked Chef Josh Wahler—industry insider and founder of Wahler & Sons—to share a few of his top grilling insights.

Chef Josh Wahler is a Livingston, New Jersey native and graduate of the Arts Institute of NYC. With over 20 years in restaurants and hotel including Jean-Georges’s Spice Market, Gramercy Tavern, and Nobu, he now runs Wahler & Sons (Chef Wahler established Wahler & Sons Quality Foods (WahlerAndSons.com), delivering restaurant-quality ingredients to home cooks across the country.

Q: What’s the #1 mistake home grillers make—and how can they fix it?
A: Avoid frequent flipping of food on the grill. This releases juices, resulting in less tender and juicy outcomes. Patience allows for proper searing, crust development, and moisture retention, resulting in a better-tasting meal.

Q: Do you recommend gas, charcoal, or wood when it comes to flavor—and why?
A: While both wood and charcoal deliver superior flavor compared to gas, gas grills excel in speed and convenience, making them ideal for fast weeknight dinners or times when the leisurely setup and cleanup of wood or charcoal are not feasible. Remember, delicious smoky flavor and everyday grilling efficiency are different things to consider when picking your ideal grill.

Q: What’s one underrated ingredient or marinade that can totally elevate grilled meat or veggies?
A: Soy sauce, or tamari for gluten-free options, adds a savory depth to marinades, bringing an exciting umami kick. Don't think of it as just for Asian food! A splash of soy sauce mixed with olive oil, lemon, salt, and pepper can surprisingly liven up all sorts of meals.

Q: Any tips for grilling delicate items like fish, fruit, or plant-based proteins without them falling apart?
A: High Heat: Ensure the grates are very hot initially for a good sear, even if they cool slightly upon food placement.
Non-Stick Prep: Generously spray both the food and the hot grates with a non-stick cooking spray (such as avocado, coconut, or olive oil). Re-spray the side being flipped and use a clean grill area.
Gentle Utensils: Utilize appropriate tongs or a spatula to prevent damage to
the food.

Q: What’s your personal go-to dish to throw on the grill when you're entertaining friends or family?
A: I enjoy variety, so I don't have one signature dish. My preference is grilling high-quality protein and crisp vegetables. Aromatics like garlic, ginger, citrus zest, and flavorful spice blends are key to enhancing the taste. Here’s the pitch:) To enhance your grilling, high-quality ingredients are key! For the freshest sashimi-grade fish, premium meats, and homemade spices and sauces, visit WahlerAndSons.com! Traveling this summer? Enjoy nationwide overnight shipping of our fresh products!

Q: Best way to clean your grill?
A: After cooking, increase the grill's heat to high and close the lid for approximately 10 minutes. Thoroughly scrape the grates, then close the lid again for an additional 5 minutes before turning the grill off and leaving the lid open to cool. Once cooled, lightly coat the grates with cooking spray or olive oil.
